# What Is Numerology

### Understanding the Science and Art of Numerology

In a simple definition, Numerology could be explained as the study of numbers—just like its name implies. To the numerologist however, the true meaning and significance of a number is more than a indicator of quantity, but an element of something far greater, the fabric and blueprint of the cosmic universe.

The letters and numbers of the Latin numeric code and alphabet have their specific translations in numeric values which can be used to better understand the cosmic vibrations that pertain to a person, location, structure, date or just about anything.

The numbers of a person’s birthdate can be added up and compared to a numeric value derived from the letters of this person’s name. The interrelations between the numbers as well as compared to other numbers can then be used by a skilled practitioner to decipher a reading.

These readings can then be used to gain glimpses on life direction, motivation, perils, opportunities or whatever notions are present in the numbers. These readings were invaluable to ancient civilizations at many points in our history. Readings were used to decide when crops should be planted, ventures should be launched, children should be educated and even when scheduling a foreign invasion or choosing a bride.

### How did All This Begin?

Numerology began as a serious study thousands of years ago. Many historians like to think it was around the same time the Greeks were perfecting their numeric systems. The Greeks were making huge advances in the development of complex mathematical concepts and many of their brightest minds were practicing Numerology.

Pythagoras, a name that we recall from grade school math, was one such Greek mathematician; he is considered by many to be the father of Numerology. But further research into Numerology and its existence as recorded geometric patterns has convinced many historians that Numerology has existed for much longer.

Numerology and its symbols can be found in early Hebrew, Chinese, Mayan, Greek and Mesopotamian cultures. Great civilizations separated by thousands of years and miles were all able to come up with the exact same concepts; is this proof that numerology is a valid science, or just that all humans like to play number games?

### Does Numerology Actually Work?

The answer to this is truly a matter of personal perspective. On the one hand, we might scoff at the idea that something as arbitrary as our date and time of birth could have any bearing on the number of children we will have or if we should marry a Jamie’ or a Sammy’.

But then, if we look across history we are forced to admit that the civilizations that were able to endure were the ones that were able to commit to a deeper understanding of times, numbers and dates and use that to gain deeper insights into the universe around them.

More than that, many of the most significant numerical concepts that have formed our human advances have been observed in the natural world around us and then applied to our benefit; concepts like the Fibonacci sequence, used by Italian shepherds to predict sheep reproduction, or the Golden Ratio, which can be observed in the growth of every tree or flower.

It is obvious to all that numbers make up the basis for our entire civilization as we know it, how much of our lives they actually control is still a matter of opinion.
